Playing tennis on vacation week with several of their key players missing, the Broncos came up with a big victory over Dover 5 - 4 on Wednesday April 30. “I was absolutely thrilled with the effort and performance that this team had,” said Coach Sue LaRoche. “Everyone stepped up and played well under some pretty tough conditions.”
Not having the No. 1, 2 and 3 players, everyone in the lineup was shuffled up three spots but held their own. Max Mahoney, Brendan Dupont, Evan LaRoche and Shane O’Brien, who played in his first varsity match as a freshman, won their singles matches. Kasper Haugbolle and Max Mahoney pulled out a victory in first doubles, which sealed the match for the Broncos. This victory improved their record to 6 - 2 overall.
Monday’s match against Trinity was rained out, and Mother Nature was not kind to the Broncos as match play was suspended due to rain on Friday, May 2, against perennial powerhouse Concord. Play resumed on Tuesday, May 6, with the Broncos taking a tough 8 - 1 loss. The first doubles team of Ben Rennie and Haugbolle pulled out the sole victory for the Broncos. Most of the singles matches were close, as were the doubles matches. Haugbolle played his best singles match of the season but dropped a 9 - 8 heartbreaker; Dupont lost his first singles match of the season 9 - 7; the second doubles team of Mahoney and Jim Reidy also lost a close match 8 - 6; Dan White and LaRoche lost in third doubles 8 - 5.
The Broncos will host Exeter on Monday, May 12, and finish the season at home on Wednesday, May 14, senior night, against Nashua North.
Varsity Baseball: The Cougars dropped their first game of the season with an 11 - 6 loss to Sanborn. Starting pitcher Dan Taschereau deserved a better fate, tossing five strong innings allowing only two earned runs against a very good hitting Sanborn squad. Tyler Bonin had two hits and three RBIs and Gabe Williams continued to swing a hot bat with three more hits and one RBI.
Varsity Softball: Julia Nolan pitched well in her first varsity appearance, but Campbell eventually lost to Sanborn 0 - 6. Ariana Liakos was three for three at the plate and Jacquie Landry was two for three with a double.
Varsity Baseball: Tyler Bonin led a 13-hit Cougar attack with three hits and six RBIs including a towering two-run homerun in a 16 - 6 victory at Newmarket. Phil Walsh had two hits and four RBIs and Gabe Williams had three hits with one RBI. John Coughlin improved his record to 3 - 0 striking out seven in five innings.
Varsity Softball: Erin McLaughlin, Ariana Liakos, JulieAnne Fernandez and Lindsay Delude had the hits as Campbell lost to Newmarket 8 - 0. Jacquie Landry pitched well in relief.
Track: We had a good day at the track meet. Many people received ribbons: Jordan Spencer, Sam Brown, Andrew Cialek and the girls 4 x 100 team. We also had some people qualify for states.
Varsity Softball: Hayley Kmon threw a two-hitter and struck out seven as the Cougars won against Hillsboro 12 - 0. JulieAnne Fernandez was the offensive star going 4 - 4 and driving in several runs.
Varsity Baseball: Gabe Williams struck out eight in four innings and was backed by a 14-hit attack as the Cougars won against Hillsboro-Deering 18 – 1, improving their record to 5 - 0. Jacob Lang and Cullen Baker both had bases-loaded triples as 12 different Cougars had hits in the victory. Josh Sigman and Erick Ruutilla both had their first varsity hits each driving in two runs.
The Alvirne girls tennis team fought the elements, Dover and Concord last week with no convincing winner emerging. Monday’s match against Trinity was rained out while the girls won against Dover on Wednesday but lost against Concord on Friday.
Wednesday’s match against Dover was “a big win for the program as Dover is one of the six teams competing for a playoff spot with us,” said Coach Dave Lelesi. Convincing wins for Kayla Belanger, Nicole Wilcox, Deanna Trearchis, and Katie Vaccaro got the girls off on the right foot. Alvirne then took the second and third doubles to seal the victory (Kayla Belanger and Hannah Tarbotton and Nicole Wilcox and Katie Vaccaro). Coach Lelesi felt that “the team finally stopped showing their youth today and looked like they are ready to make a push to return to the playoffs.”
Unfortunately for the Lady Broncos on Friday they ran into a perennially strong Concord squad and lost 8 - 1. The lone win was provided by Alexa Trearchis in first singles as she played one of her best matches this year and defeated her opponent 9 - 7. Alvirne sports a record of 5 - 4 overall and is battling for a playoff spot. The girls will host Goffstown on May 9 in their final home match of the season.
On Friday, May 2, the Alvirne girls track team participated in the Girls Clipper Relays in Portsmouth, New Hampshire. This meet is different from most, as all events are relays, including field events. The girls team placed fifth overall out of 15 teams.
For the Broncos, the 4 x 200 relay team of Kaitlin Bowes, Shauna Murphy, Amanda Roberts and Shayla Bergeron placed first (1:52.2), breaking a school record. The same group ran in the 4 x 100 relay and placed second.
The triple-jump team of Bianca Bellot, Roberts and Stacie Nuttall won its event while the long-jump relay team of Bellot, Roberts and Nikki Godschall finished second overall.
Godschall, Allysa Higgins, Bellot and Abbey Whitney, finished third overall in the 4 X 400 relay.
In the steeple chase relay, Alvirne finished third overall. The steeple chase involves jumping over four obstacles 100 meters apart on each lap of the race. Shawna Johnson ran the 1,200-meter leg, Laura Goudreau ran the 800-meter leg, and Whitney and Maria Mayer ran the 400-meter legs. Coach Tarek Rothe was “very pleased with the girls’ performances.”
The Lady Broncos were on vacation from school last week but the hectic spring schedule did not stop as they played and lost two games. Mother Nature stepped in to wash out their Monday game against Trinity, which will be made up on May 20, but they took it on the chin against Dover losing 3 - 0 and to Concord 5 - 2.
The Dover game saw a great pitching performance by Jess Brun as she had seven strikeouts and did not issue a walk, but the offense could not get on track as Ashley Metevier managed the lone hit against Dover. Defensively, Nastasha Powlowsky had a great game behind the plate as she gunned down two Dover base runners. The loss dropped Alvirne’s record to 5 - 4.
On Friday, amid the clouds and cool weather, the offense heated up but could not push enough runs across the plate as it lost to Concord. With no outs in the fourth inning, Alvirne loaded the bases but could only muster two runs as Julia Ryan had an RBI fielder’s choice to plate one run, and Metevier walked to push another run across. Kat Scafidi had a double while Powlowsky, Bri Terrill and Sam Hill provided the other hits for Alvirne.
Fortunately, vacation ended and the bats erupted as AHS rebounded nicely trouncing Winnacunnet 10 - 1 on Monday, May 5. Metevier had a great day as she went three for three with four RBIs. Powlowsky also went three for three with a sacrifice fly and Terrill was two for four scoring two runs. Brun fired a complete game victory as she struck out eight and walked one.
The Lady Broncos’ record is now 6 - 5. They will host Manchester Central on May 9, and Bishop Guertin on May 15.
